I was indoctrinated into the world of techno in the early 90's. The music and the culture download all tracks from soundcloud for free was new to Toronto and still very much underground, so much so that finding out the location of a party involved an intricate cat and mouse game of location meet ups, temporary phone numbers and code words. Parties that hosted 300 people and featured then unknown artists like Carl Cox, Moby and Speedy J on the turntables blossomed into commercialized and publicly promoted events. DJs became celbrities soon after that, but the scene flamed out and moved mainly back to Europe. My reason for getting into rave culture was always about the music, so although the parties died out, the music never did and I continued to listen and appreciate it from a distance. With the recent explosion of EDM around the world, the scene has new life in Toronto. I write about what I see and hear during this new electronic music uprising.
